Nyesom Wike
Position: Governor of Rivers State

Status: In Office

In the present day politics of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, is a huge factor that must be taken into consideration. He has suddenly become a phenomenon of a sort since he was appointed a minister by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Some few years ago, the name Wike did not ring a bell to many Nigerians, particularly Rivers people. It was only a few people who are knowledgeable with the politics of Rivers State who may say that Wike was the juggernaut of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area politics.

He was a council chairman for two tenures from 1999 to 2007. But overnight, Chief Wike became a household name in the state as Chief of Staff to Governor Amaechi. He became the Chief of Staff after the Supreme Court ordered for the immediate swearing in of Amaechi as governor in 2007.

He was the national deputy President of Association of Local Government of Nigeria, (ALGON) while still serving as the chairman of Obio/Akpor council area.

Wike suddenly fell out with his former boss, Amaechi when he became a minister. Many believe that Wike decided to confront Amaechi because of the governor’s disposition with the President. Besides that, news has been making the rounds that Wike who is from Ikwerre ethnic nationality with Amaechi wants to become the next governor.

Whether the Minister makes his intention public now or not, his body language actually leaves nobody in doubt that he needs the Brick House just the same way a traveler needs water in the desert. If for anything, various groups in the state have so far endorsed the minister to as a matter of urgency declare his intention to contest the 2015 governorship election irrespective of where he comes from.

By sheer providence, Wike is the leader of the PDP in Rivers State. Apart from the ethnic nationalities that have thrown their weight behind him, Wike is said to be enjoying the motherly support of the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan.

Though he is the leader of the party, Wike’s governorship interest has caused disaffection within the party in the state. He has been accused of manipulating the leadership of the state PDP which is led by Chief Felix Obuah. Some aggrieved members of the party are of the view that should Wike declare for the governorship, they will defect to the APC en mass.

No doubt about it, Wike is the most influential politician in Rivers State today. Going by the role he played in the re-election of Governor Amaechi in 2011, the minister is believed to have the magic wand of turning the political fortunes to his favor. To some party faithful, Wike is the only material in the PDP that march the APC government money for money, bone for bone and power for power in the next election.

He won the 2015 gubernatorial election in Rivers state and was sworn into office on the 29th of May 2015
